Aylesbury Methodist Church, One World Week, Sunday 21 October 2007
Members of the congregation from 19 countries took part in a special service at Aylesbury Methodist Church to mark One World Week. Several wore national dress and sported their country’s flag.
There were prayers for Africa by Philip Kolade, Asia by Ashish Singh and Raoul, friend of Jegaraman Paranthaban, Europe by Anneliese Varsey and the West Indies by Paula Gordon. A video clip of worship in Uganda was shown by Hannelize van Zyl and church steward Beatrice Grant described a typical Sunday in her home country of Jamaica. Three vocalists from The Church of God who use the Methodist church on Sunday afternoons performed one of the hymns.
Aylesbury’s minister the Reverend David Jenkins explained that the service was about celebrating diversity. “We are all unique but all share in a common humanity and deserve mutual respect irrespective of skin colour, intellect, talent or age. What unites all these people is our common allegiance to Jesus Christ.”
Countries represented in the congregation were Antigua, Bahamas, Dominica, England, Germany, Ghana, Grenada, Guyana, Holland, India, Northern Ireland, Ireland, Jamaica, Nigeria, Scotland, South Africa, Sri Lanka, St Lucia, St Vincent, Trinidad and Tobago, Wales and Zimbabwe.
