The £1 Million Back Door

AYL 1 m door

Robert Bucknell, Project Secretary, receives the keys to the newly refurbished Aylesbury Methodist Community Centre from Architect Michele Youngman. They are standing in front of the doorway that cost the church £1 million. The stonework of the door has been cleaned and retained within the new entrance foyer.

“It all began with complaints that the back door looked shabby”, said project spokesman Peter Green. “Other concerns followed and before we knew it the Church Council called for a ‘bold and imaginative scheme’ to update all our back premises. The scheme has cost us just over £1 million so we must have the most expensive back door in Buckinghamshire!”

After Easter, the church hall will be used for Sunday worship whilst the church itself is redecorated. It is all planned to be fully operational in time for a Flower festival in early June and the official opening of the centre by Sir Terry Wogan on 11th July.

The project, designed by Compton Lacey Architects was completed on time and within budget by Francis Construction. The builders came on site in July 2008 and finished in March 2009.  Reaction from church members who have now seen the completed building is one of unanimous delight and enthusiasm.
